A set of eyes close up

Seen In Your Eyes

Seen In Your EyesMiner_Mar-24.png

Two simple miners had been digging through rocks for several months, looking for precious stone which could help them support their families. One day, in the cracks between the rocks, they saw something shining. It looked like they found what they were hoping for!

Since the discovery happened late in the evening Saturday, they decided to cover the treasure and return early Monday morning to finish. They promised each other to maintain absolute secrecy so that no one would know about their find.

When they left their homes Monday morning, several people began to follow them as they made their way to the secret location. As they got closer, they noticed even more people started to follow them. The miners began to reproach each other for not keeping the secret, yet each of them claimed that they had not told anyone anything.

After a long, fruitless discussion, they turned to ask the people directly:
“Who told you about our treasure?”

“No one,” they replied. "It can be seen in your eyes.”

"I recalled this story after an extended vacation; I returned to one of the parishes where I frequently offered my assistance. As I greeted the familiar faces in the sacristy, a parishioner who was unaware of my absence exclaimed, “Oh Father, it seems like you enjoyed some time off!” Surprisingly, he had deduced this from my handshake alone. It reminded me that many aspects of ourselves are noticeable even before we utter a word. Thus, by prioritizing acts of kindness, we have a greater potential to impact others than merely relying on our words."  - Fr. Janusz Horowski
